Heading to Cyprus but still unsure which part of the island to stay in? Discover why this charming resort on the southern coast could be the perfect choice for you.

Ayia Napa is one of Cyprus’ most popular resorts. Located in the Famagusta district on the southeastern coast of Cyprus, the town has few permanent residents, but when it comes to the number of tourists visiting each year, only Paphos in the west can compete with it. Travelers choose to vacation in Ayia Napa for many reasons. The hot climate and numerous attractions, both for families with children and tourists seeking fun, are just part of the appeal. The city and its surroundings are also a hub of paradise beaches, natural wonders, and romantic spots.

The City of Ayia Napa

This city, once a small fishing village, is now one of the most popular holiday destinations in Cyprus, and possibly in Europe. On one hand, you’ll find numerous restaurants and tavernas tempting passersby with the aromas of local cuisine, and on the other, pubs and nightclubs where it’s hard to stand still. There are also trendy boutiques and shops with local products, perfect for souvenirs for loved ones. And all of this is set against the natural beauty of Cyprus, so even those who say “no” to excessive consumerism on vacation won’t be disappointed.

The city of Ayia Napa takes its name from the monastery of the same name.

The city center is marked by a monumental monastery, with streets winding around it that capture the typical atmosphere of a holiday resort. Among them, it’s easy to find interesting gems. On the way to the bustling harbor, you can pass the modern building of St. George’s Church and many of the statues characteristic of the town.

The shores of Ayia Napa are guarded by a 3-meter-tall bronze mermaid of royal descent, while two statues of farmers pay tribute to all the locals working in agriculture. However, if you consider yourself a true sculpture enthusiast, you must visit a special park in Ayia Napa, which you’ll learn about shortly.

Ayia Napa Monastery

In the heart of Ayia Napa, the charming medieval monastery catches the eye of passersby. The pride of the town was built around 1500, although its exact construction date remains unknown. The monastery is particularly intriguing from an architectural standpoint. Some of its elements are located underground, and the entire structure seems to be carved out of rock.

The temple is dedicated to Our Lady of the Forest, and for good reason. According to legend, a hunter’s dog once found a shining icon of this very Madonna in a cave. This is why the grotto became a site of worship, leading to the construction of a church, and later the monastery, which we can still see today.

The Sculpture Park and Cactus Park

Located along Cape Greko Avenue is a park you simply cannot miss. It serves as both an open-air Sculpture Museum and a Cactus and Succulent Park. Spanning 20,000 square meters, it houses a sculptural collection created by artists from around the world. Notably, the number of statues is constantly growing, as new works are regularly added by sculptors participating in the annual Sculpture Symposium organized by the municipality of Ayia Napa. Against the backdrop of the impressive sea, you can stroll through the park’s pathways and see representations of heroes, animals, mermaids, and other mythological creatures, as well as abstract carvings in stone.

An extension of the Sculpture Park is the Mediterranean Plants, Cacti, and Succulents Park, which is also continuously expanding. This project aims to showcase the varieties of cacti and drought-resistant plants that thrive on the island and throughout the Mediterranean region. Both parks complement each other beautifully and are sure to pleasantly surprise not just sculpture and botany enthusiasts. They are worth visiting, if only because they are open year-round, located in a stunningly picturesque area, and free to enter.

The Thalassa Municipal Museum of the Sea

The Thalassa Museum, operating since 2005, is a must-see for those fascinated by history and the marine world, as its exhibits highlight the significance of the sea in Cyprus’ past and present. Each of the museum’s seven levels is dedicated to a different period of life on the island. Visiting the museum is particularly engaging thanks to features like audiovisual panels, documentary films shown in various rooms, and a glass floor that serves as a projector screen.

The main stars of the museum, of course, are its exhibits. Among the Cypriot antiquities, you can find a composite vase from the early Bronze Age, fish-decorated plates, and an exact replica of the ancient Kyrenia ship. However, what usually makes an even greater impression on visitors are the specimens of Mediterranean marine fauna, which were collected after their natural death. The displays include shells, colorful corals, sponges, stuffed fish, mammals, birds, and other marine organisms.

Lovers’ Bridge

The most romantic spot on the entire island is considered to be this part of the southern coast, so if you’re planning magical proposals in Cyprus, here’s the ideal location (though perhaps not the most original, as every other beach nearby is likely to be less frequented by love-struck couples). The Lovers’ Bridge, as it’s called, is a natural stone arch extending from a coastal plateau into the crystal-clear, turquoise sea. Well, this is a view everyone dreams of seeing, not just those struck by Cupid’s arrow.

This spot gained its fame not only for its stunning views but also for the legends associated with it. It’s said that your deepest wishes will come true if you kiss your significant other while standing in the middle of the arch. There are also rumors that the power of this ritual is enhanced by a sunset visible on the horizon. How effective this ritual is remains unknown, but whether your desires come true or not, you certainly won’t regret stopping at this picturesque spot.

Bridge of Love

The stone Lovers’ Bridge should not be confused with its nearby neighbor, the Bridge of Love. While it may not be as impressive as the natural rock formation, it holds great significance for those in love and those seeking it. Unlike other famous bridges worldwide, weighed down by countless love locks, this one is simple and stands out with its colorful panels. Interestingly, it doesn’t span a river but crosses over a small stream. This bridge was specifically created as a symbol of love. This was confirmed by Ayia Napa’s mayor, Yiannis Karusos, who inaugurated the bridge on February 14th, Valentine’s Day, with his beloved wife by his side.

FUN FACT: Among the residents of Ayia Napa, there’s a belief that the Bridge of Love is a man-made complement to the natural Lovers’ Bridge. Together, they are said to create an incredibly romantic and heartwarming atmosphere in the area.

Beaches in Ayia Napa

The hot climate, fantastic beaches, bars, and clubs are major attractions in Ayia Napa.

Sandy beaches are an essential feature of seaside resorts, no matter the country, and Ayia Napa is no exception. If you’re not keen on driving, you can easily walk to Pantachou Beach, Glyki Nero Beach, or Pernera Beach, but for the most famous beaches in the area, you’ll need to venture a bit further. On the western edge of Ayia Napa lies the beach known all across the island – Nissi Beach. This golden, paradise-like shoreline is sheltered from the wind and leads into crystal-clear waters. Its gentle slope into the sea makes it perfect for the youngest visitors, while numerous bars ensure that more entertainment-oriented vacationers won’t get bored.

However, you don’t have to choose the always-crowded, famous Nissi Beach to have a good time. A bit further west, you’ll find quieter beaches like Landa Beach, Latchi Adams Beach, or Ayia Thekla Beach. A great choice could also be Makronissos Beach, formed by a cluster of small bays. For those who can’t sit still for long, it’s worth noting that most beaches in Ayia Napa boast excellent conditions for water sports, so you can easily plan some fun on jet skis or water skiing.

Waterworld Water Park

The area around Ayia Napa is just as entertaining as the town itself. One of the attractions worth visiting is Waterworld, which offers both kids and adults a break from the island heat. This water park (one of the largest in all of Europe) is entirely themed around Greek mythology. That means you can take a dip in Aphrodite’s pools, test your skills in the Minotaur’s water maze, float down the lazy river like Odysseus on his journey, or ride the artificial waves created by Poseidon himself.

Kids will have a blast on the obstacle course or the Trojan Horse-inspired playground, while thrill-seekers will likely queue up to experience Icarus’ fall and try out the Medusa or Hydra water slides.

Magical Cape Greco Peninsula

Just 10 km separates Ayia Napa from one of southern Cyprus’ natural gems. Cape Greco National Park, located on the eastern coast of the island, is one of the most visited nature reserves. It consists of a labyrinth of romantic paths lined with pines and numerous benches, inviting passersby to stop and admire the surrounding landscapes. And these aren’t just any landscapes—they feature the vast, turquoise sea stretching to the horizon, with limestone cliffs plunging into the waters. You won’t find a better backdrop for photos in the area. But don’t worry, this cape is much more than just a photogenic panorama.

What to do at Cape Greco?

You’re already familiar with the nature trails that let you discover the pristine beauty of the peninsula, but you should also know about the bike trails scattered throughout the area. It’s worth using them, as Cyprus is famous for its ideal cycling climate year-round. If you prefer other activities, there’s no need to change locations – Cape Greco is a great spot for water sports enthusiasts. Locals arrive at dawn to fish, while adrenaline seekers practice cliff jumping (only in designated areas, of course).

However, the most iconic feature of the peninsula is likely the sea caves scattered along the coast. The clear water offers excellent visibility, and the shallow depth makes it safe for even inexperienced divers to explore. Underwater, you’ll find a continuation of the fantastical rock formations, coral reefs, and marine life – from small fish to sea turtles.

Ayioi Anargyroi Chapel

One of the few structures you’ll encounter within the Cape Greco National Park is the Agioi Anargyroi Chapel. This small building is dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian, physicians who miraculously healed the sick without asking for payment. Though the interior of the chapel is rather modest, its exterior, echoing the typical Greek white-and-blue buildings, attracts a fair share of tourists. Its charm is enhanced by its location on a small rocky cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of Cape Greco.

Makronissos Tombs

Heading west from Ayia Napa, after less than 8 km, you’ll find yourself near the previously mentioned Makronissos Beach. Instead of spending the entire day sunbathing, it’s worth considering a visit to the nearby archaeological site. The excavation of this ancient burial site from Roman and Hellenistic times is one of the most fascinating discoveries in Ayia Napa.

So far, nineteen tombs, a small sanctuary, and part of an ancient quarry adjacent to the cemetery have been uncovered. Unfortunately, all the tombs discovered so far have been looted, and not all are in good condition. Nevertheless, they are worth seeing to transport yourself, if only for a moment, to the Cyprus of hundreds of years ago through the power of imagination.

Surroundings of Ayia Napa

While Ayia Napa is often considered the main destination for a vacation, some people use it as a base for exploring the surrounding areas. And I can’t blame them—its location is ideal for this. Those who prioritize sightseeing over pure relaxation will likely want to organize a few excursions, such as trips to Larnaca, the CyHerbia Botanical Garden, or perhaps even to the Turkish side of the island, which offers a slightly different cultural experience.

If you’re planning on venturing further, you may want to consider renting a car. You can easily do this through platforms like RentalCars, but keep in mind that Cyprus has left-hand traffic, which might be an additional thrill for some. If you’d rather leave the trip planning to someone else during your holiday, you can effortlessly book excursions through GetYourGuide, which can arrange activities such as diving adventures, trips to Paphos, or boat cruises along the entire coast of Ayia Napa.
